Interview with Keith Dissinger

My guest today is Keith Dissinger, author of the Seven Seas series.

Keith grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania and has worked in various fields including coal mining. Keith and his wife currently live in Alberta, Canada. In addition to writing, he works full time in the oil industry.

Hi Keith. Welcome to Just Books
Would you like to kick off by telling us how your journey as a writer begin?
I began reading fiction at an early age. As I read more and more, I started coming up with ideas for stories. One day I decided to write my ideas down. Over time, the stories developed into novels.

What do you think are the hardest and easiest parts about being a writer?
The hardest part is expressing thoughts into words. The easiest part for me is writing the type of books that I’d like to read. I like the characters in my books and I enjoy writing the stories.

Tell us about your writing routine, please; what’s a typical writing day for you?
I get up at 4:00 a.m. and write for fifteen minutes before work. After work I write at least another hour. On my days off, I try to spend two to three hours writing every day. I find mornings my most productive time.

What inspires your books...?
A sense of adventure coupled with a desire to explore exotic locales.

...and are there any particular places that help you get the creative cogs turning?

The ocean. When I gaze out at the sea, it’s easy for my mind to wander. Before long, I’m thinking about pirates and far off lands.

Who is your favourite character from your book and why?
Art Kendall. He’s a direct, no-nonsense man. Although he’s a fictional character, I molded his character in part around my Grandfather who was larger than life and the same type of man.

Who designed your book covers?
I work with Lorena Martin from Pre-Made E-Book Covers. I find Lorena very accommodating and easy to work with.

What about your previous books, tell us a bit about them and how we can get our hands on them.
At this point, I’ve published three books with a fourth coming out before the end of the year. The books are a series but each is a complete story and can be read as a standalone novel. The series follows a main character and his friends as they travel the world’s oceans in search of adventure. All of my books are available on Amazon.

Which fictional character, book or film, would you like to meet and why?
Dirk Pitt from Clive Cussler’s novels. He is the perfect male character and can think his way out of any situation.

What do you want written on your head stone?
Loving Husband, Father, and Grandfather.

What three words best describe your personality?
Optimistic, honest, focused.

What is your top writing tip?
I’m a firm believer that writing is a skill that can be honed through consistent practice.

Who is your intended audience and why should they read your book?
Men of all ages are my intended audience, although a few women are among the biggest fans of my books. I don’t write literary works of art. I write fast paced adventurous books that are fun to read. My characters live a life the everyday man or woman would love to experience. I know many men and women enjoy this type of book as a brief escape from the daily grind.

Do you read much and if so who are your favourite authors.
I read a good deal. My favorite authors are Clive Cussler, Wilbur Smith, Earnest Hemmingway, Ken Follett.

How else do you spend your free time?
Swimming is my favorite exercise. I also love the outdoors and remote, quiet places.

If you were a super hero, what would your name be? What costume would you wear?

Super Grandpa. I’d probably wear the  costume, my Grandkids would love that.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?

To anyone who wants to be an author, I say keep at it. Don’t allow anything to stop you. To anyone who reads my books, I truly hope you enjoy the read.

Thank you for joining us, Keith. Best wishes with all your future adventures!

Thank you
